When the original Only Yules & Verses book was self-published in 2013, an unsolicited comment appeared on Amazon. I call stuff like this little nudges of encouragement. Of course, for every flattering nudge, there are several pokes in the eye waiting in the wings. Here’s the comment:

I have read authors' blurbs before extolling the mirth to be found in THEIR book only to buy the book and be severely disappointed. What an unexpected joy, therefore, to pick up this little gem and read it to the end with smiles, a few laughs out loud and some headshakes at the ingenuity of Joe Cushnan. I thoroughly enjoyed this and wholeheartedly recommend it to everyone.

CELEBRITY BOOKS AT CHRISTMAS
Christmas is coming,
And do you know how I know?
Celeb books are being flogged
On every TV show.
All the starry listers,
From A right through to Zed,
Hope we'll spend our cash and hang
On every word we've read.
Some reinvent their childhoods
To get the sympathy buy,
Some fill 300 pages
With a mix of truth and lie.
Some get confused assuming
That we really give a monkey’s
About shallow lives and woe-is-me,
And glittery showbiz flunkies.
Amongst the blah and blether books,
A few seem worth a read,
But only when the price is right
Will I pay them any heed.
Here's my plan to be selective,
With the kiss and tell and quirks,
I'll wait for the bargain season,
In January at The Works*.
