.....THEN FOUR BOOKS TURN UP AT ONCE!

It's been a busy couple of months in the writing department.  I have four books coming out soon, two are amended and redesigned books of old and two are new works.

All the books will be available from http://www.feedaread.com/ (a service that plays fair, is free to use up to the point of book purchases, produces quality paperbacks and pays royalties promptly. Check them out.)

STEPHEN BOYD: FROM BELFAST TO HOLLYWOOD, my book on the star of Ben Hur and The Fall of the Roman Empire has gone from a 6 inch x 9 inch format to a 5 inch x 8 inch format.
The cover has been redesigned, the text has been tightened up to make it look neater, several corrections have been made, some black and white pictures are included and, rather like DVDs, I have added extras - my script from the 2013 Belfast Book Festival, a newspaper article I wrote about Stephen Boyd and an essay appreciating the writing skills of actor James Ellis who kindly wrote the foreword.
This book is available now from http://www.feedaread.com/ and soon via Amazon and a litany of other booksellers.

SHOPS, SHOPPERS, SHOPPING & SHAFTED combines my two business books, Retail Confidential (a sort of Carry on Retailing account of my looooonnnngggg career with, hopefully, helpful stories and guidance for shop employees and shoppers alike) and Much Calamity & The Redundance Kid (sub-title: Job Loss, Seriously A Funny Old Game, telling of the three job losses in my career and of not letting the bastards grind me down. It offers guidance with some humour on dealing with job loss as well as job hunting.) - a twofer if you like.  The cover is being designed and the mighty tome should be out in a month or so.

BEFORE AMNESIA: SEEDS OF A MEMOIR is dedicated to me, in case I forget the things I remember. Essays, poems, random memories of important and trivial matters and a play, Shaking Hands, all combine to lay a foundation for a more complete memoir should a) I be bothered to write it and b) anyone give a damn.  The cover is being designed and the book should be out soon. Here's the rough blurb:

‘I’ve a grand memory for forgetting….” Alan Breck to David Balfour in Robert Louis Stevenson’s ‘Kidnapped”
Before Amnesia, Seeds of a Memoir is a blend of humour and serious reflection, there to entertain, inform and, perhaps, enlighten. It is not a conventional autobiographical project. The book contains two essays on my background (Belfast and beyond), a selection of random memories, two poetry sections and a script for a proposed radio drama about a father and a son meeting after a gap of fifty years.  On a quite serious note, we are all prone to losing our memories as we get older, either through natural forgetfulness or by something more debilitating. I would like my family in the future to have some written record of me, not for personal vanity but to give them a few details about life as I experienced it.  I might get round to writing my whole story but for now, with the words of Alan Jay Lerner singing in my head: ‘Ah yes! I remember it well’, these notes and observations lay some kind of a foundation.

SHAKING HANDS is a play written as a 45-minute radio drama. I decided to include it in Before Amnesia and to publish it as an entity in its own right.  At the time of writing, it has not been performed. It is fiction based on several facts from my life. A 60-year-old son tracks down his 89-year-old father to question him on what he left the family home, a wife and seven children more than fifty years ago. In the quest to understand the 'missing' years, the son finds it hard to suppress his anger and the father clings to hope of reconciliation. It would be great to see it performed one day and for acting students to use it to practice their dramatic skills. The cover, simple white lettering on a blue background should be available to view soon.

And relax!

PAY WILLIAM MILLAR (STEPHEN BOYD) £3.3.0

Here's a copy of a cheque made out to William Millar (who became Stephen Boyd) for a theatre job in Northern Ireland in 1951. A friend and theatre colleague of his, Thomas Kemp, sent it to me a few years ago.

Stephen Boyd: From Belfast To Hollywood

(Revised Edition)

by Joe Cushnan

Paperback available to buy now via the link below
A version of this book was published in 2013. I have made minor adjustments to the text, added some illustrations and some extra writing segments. "Stephen Boyd was one of the nicest, kindest people I have met in my lifetime, rare in this profession." - Euan Lloyd, film producer of Shalako, The Man Called Noon and The Wild Geese. "Joe Cushnan’s excellent biography of Stephen Boyd, the forgotten film star and a fellow countryman of mine, fills a disgraceful gap in cinematographic history and should be read by all who are interested in that fascinating subject." - James Ellis, actor in Z Cars, The Billy Plays, etc Stephen Boyd was one of the biggest film stars of the late 1950s and 1960s (The Man Who Never Was, Ben Hur, The Fall of the Roman Empire, Fantastic Voyage, etc), an ordinary boy from Northern Ireland who made a dream journey to Hollywood, starring alongside some of the most prestigious names in cinema including Tyrone Power, Susan Hayward, Gregory Peck, Brigitte Bardot, Charlton Heston, Sophia Loren, James Mason, Gina Lollobrigida, Omar Sharif, Doris Day, Sean Connery and Raquel Welch. This is the first book to celebrate his life and work. He had a 20-year film career, sadly cut short by his sudden death, aged 45, in 1977. (REVISED) STEPHEN BOYD: FROM BELFAST TO HOLLYWOOD

I have corrected some minor errors in the manuscript, added some illustrations and included a few extras pieces including my appreciation of actor James Ellis, (who wrote the foreword) as a fine writer of stories and poems.

I also changed the cover design and the book size from 6x9 inch to 5x8 inch, and tightened up the appearance of the text.

The revised paperback is available via this link:

CAUGHT IN THE SQUALL, SIR (BELFAST MAN, 80)

“….caught in the squall, sir

no hassle, sir

food on the table, sir
work and wages, sir
two nights a week in the pub, sir
simple things, sir
a bit of peace and quiet, sir
look out for each other, sir
stop looking back, sir
the here and now, sir
a future to look forward to, sir
thousands dead, sir
thousands maimed, sir
thousands traumatised, sir
thousands grieving, sir
what for, sir
what for, sir
the bastards in charge, sir
are no better than the bastards before, sir
in the blink of an eye, sir
the whole thing’s on its arse, sir
but don’t listen to me, sir
just an ordinary, ignorant, old has-been, sir
old shites like me never had a voice, sir
whatever you say, say nothing, sir
what’s the bloody point, sir
caught in the squall, sir….”

BROWSER

There she is again, browsing,
Not bartering, bargaining, buying,
Just looking at book after book,
Reading, shuffling, pausing, sighing,
Always careful with the pages,
Each one a delicate leaf, precious
Container of someone else's words
But laced with parallels, feelings she knew
In her own life story, aches, urges, dreams,
And characters passing through.

She leaves the shop, looks around,
Thinking, deciding and opts to turn right.
Something she had read had guided her,
Had cracked her darkness with light.

WHEN JOHNNY KIDD & THE PIRATES WERE SHAKIN’ ALL OVER, I WAS DOING THE SAME AS I HANDED MY FIRST SCHOOL REPORT TO MY MOTHER (1960)

It was a good report, so one of the teachers said.  My mother sat and read it.
Her face was still as she concentrated on the information.
I watched for a twitch here and there but nothing for a while
Until her mouth slowly widened into the biggest, brightest smile.

She ruffled my hair and hugged me, saying “well done” twice,
I think I blushed, I know I blushed. “What a clever wee boy.”

“7 out of 10 for Sums,
10 out of 10 for Spelling,
8 out of 10 for Reading,
6 out of 10 for Writing,
8 out of 10 for Composition,
Class 3B, 8th out of 45 children”

And one begrudged word at the bottom under remarks:
“Pass”. 8th and only “Pass”.

I was entitled to one-seventh of her time and attention
But that late afternoon it was just us, no brothers or sisters,
Her smile beaming and her eyes lit,
One-seventh share of her time and attention,
But, briefly, I had all of it.
