In the beginning, the twilight years
seem even further than the horizon,
and then slowly, very slowly, childhood
eases into teenage years, the twenties
and the pace starts to quicken,
the end
getting closer and closer and closer,
over the cusp of middle age, then gathering speed,
fifties, sixties, seventies and beyond,
less years left than you have lived,
dwindling time to right wrongs, settle scores,
to answer honestly all the whys and wherefores,
to balance your accounts, to close your book,
after one last over your shoulder look.
